I’ve been doing most of my running out on trails. At places like Shady Canyon Trail, Quail Trail, the Laguna Niguel Regional Park, and anywhere else I can hit some dirt and some hills.
I don’t know why, but it feels easier out on the trail than on the pavement. I’m kicking harder to go faster and make it up the hill, but each hill feels like a little victory and the view that comes after it gives me the momentum and strength to keep going…faster.
Then I found the Xterra SoCal race series. They have a trail race coming up at Crystal Cove on December 9th. The 15k sold out, so I registered for the 6k. That works out well anyway, since I have a sore calf and I can run it fast.
Then, I’ll have some time to get some proper training in and get some base runs in to build my endurance for their upcoming trail races.
But the more I think about all of this, the more I realize, this is what I want to do… Trail runs.
I think I’ll start with some 10k’s and work my way to the half-marathons and longer distances. After that, who knows. I’ve never really thought of myself as wanting to become a long-distance runner. But I do know I love me some good trail runs and I definitely see many more trail races in my future!
